Survivor Story

I woke up in a luxury resort in Phuket lying in bed on Boxing Day in 2004.  It was about 8:00 and I decided to get some breakfast and go for a swim in the pool for an hour and a half.

It was now 9:30 and I went for a walk on Patong Beach before I went to explore Phuket. In the distance I could see a wave coming closer and closer and a woman next to me yelled TSUNAMI!!!!! Every body was running to higher ground. The wave has now hit Phuket and I have made it to higher ground and in the far distance you could see people getting killed by the wave.

It was now safe to go to lower ground. The only thing around was dead bodies and rubbish. I went to Phuket for an experience of a life time and I got one but not an enjoyable experience. It was now the 28th of December and I had no food, water and no way to get out of this disaster. “I’ve got to get out of here, I need to get out of here,” These were some thoughts going threw my mind.

I was walking down the street and a little boy came up to me with a sign saying missing parents help me. How would you feel if you didn’t have a Parent or caregiver to look after you, only me myself and I?

BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! I woke up in a luxury resort in Phuket lying in bed on Boxing Day in 2010.

How can they be prepared for a Tsunami again?

Now in Phuket they have a Tsunami warning system to give people awareness if a Tsunami is coming. They would now have some canned food and water stored away if a disaster like this would happen again. They would also have medical supplies if a person is injured.  If a Tsunami was coming they would run for the hills or higher ground.

How did the Tsunami happen?

A earthquake with a high magnitude set off a Tsunami heading towards Phuket and the people weren’t warned early enough so there were many lives lost and injured.

What happened to get life back to normal?

They opened some businesses and started to plant some seeds for food so they can get necessities. They had to open businesses like Motels and Hotels for tourists. They needed to clear the beach and find dead bodies. People also needed to build homes for shelter. I remember going to a restaurant in Phuket in 2004 and going to the restaurant again in 2010 and it is quite different.

What affect did it have on people?

People would have been affected because their home and life would have been destroyed and damaged like an injury or death because of the Phuket tsunami. They would have been dehydrated and starving for food and water because all of those necessities would disappeared because of the wave. People would of lost their friends and family from the wave and some would have been injured or even missing.

What affect did it have on Phuket?

Phuket would of lost some of there culture like Elephants because of the wave. They would have lost some necessities like food and water. People would have lost their jobs because the business was hit by the Tsunami. They would have also run out of medical supplies for people and this would have caused people to die and population would of dropped.

Who was affected in the Phuket Tsunami?

People that live and went to a place In the Indian Ocean for a holiday would have been affected because of the Tsunami in 2004. People with businesses would have also been affected if there business were located near a beach because if a disaster happens the tourists would not come because it would be dangerous so they would not have any customers. A lot of businesses were destroyed and damaged. People that lived in Thailand would of lost their homes.
